The Writing on the Wall

Posted on May 5, 2015 by in Art | 0 comments

Six year old Ben lifted up his eyes to the wall

by our breakfast table

and read words that have been there

for months.

But he looked with

new I’ve conquered kindergarten eyes.

Causes me to wonder

what is behind me, beside me

that I’ve never seen before

because I haven’t yet learned

the skill of recognition,

to see the writing on the wall.

The words read

find joy in the ordinary

and give thanks.

Still so much of life

I cannot make sense of,

but answers hide

in the ordinary means of learning.

Having conquered the wall décor,

Ben cast his eyes to the Time magazine

in front of me with the over-confidence of

a new champion.

Alas, it proved too difficult,

but we still have

the writing on the wall.
